The article looks at the advertising and marketing of Chevy’s feature truck, the Tahoe. The advertisers point of the commercial was to spark controversy and a stir up publicity that would in the end prove an ingenious marketing strategy for the truck. The negative feedback, ultimately brought about more and more people interested in the attention surrounding the commercial. The article makes it point that youtube has opened up alot of cheaper marketing strategies for firms.

This article looks at the loss of creativity within new and thriving artists. Alot of todays modern art has become and mirror image of past works and then somehow reworked or looked at with a different viewpoint. The lack of originality and creativity is hindering art today. Artists are now more attentive to what people want to see and what they perceive to be the popular art form of the time, and that is what they mimic and produce.

In this article it takes a look at the credibility of youtube, the popular video site. You are able to post all types of material to the website, some favorable and some unfavorable to the people featured in the video. It also has been a starting block for new artists to post music, comedians to post stand-up routines, and other entrepreneurs looking to make a name for themselves. The article also looks at the ease of plagiarism within the site with artists songs and words being altered or reproduced in all similar ways. Youtube does have a policy that hinders this widespread with many videos being taken down for copyright infringement.

Project 3: Party of One

In this picture that I produced, I wanted to portray the different things that a person at a college party would be doing at any give moment in time. The subject is playing drinking games, taking shots, and doing other things that occur at college parties. It can be seen as a freeze in time, but in actually it is the same person doing each thing.

Within Bill Viola’s article, I found the most interesting point to be the contrast between video ans film. He talks about how a film is basically a continuous reel of photographs whereas video is closer to a microphone than a camera. He also talks about how film is only film when it is recorded or filmed but video is video all the time and is being “video-ed” all the time and the actual taping or recordig is not integral in it’s make up. He also diverges into the possibility of virtual imaging and the constant evolution of the mediums through which our brains process what we see and an eventual medium-less medium creating an external reality.

Self-Portrait (Project 2)

In this project, we were to construct alternate personalities and characterizations of ourselves. I chose to do a derelict, a solider, and a business man. In its order, it is supposed to show the different views of the American and through their subtle differences between facial expressions and head positions, it conveys the distinct contrast between each.

This article, written by Jonathan Lethem, discusses the role of plagiarism throughout the course of time in forms of art, literature, and entertainment. He sees it as a necessary way to progress in your art form. It can be used, in form, to play off the original piece and give a new fresh version of that older piece. He states that, “without Rankin/Bass and Charlie Brown Christmas specials, there would be no South Park; and without the Flintstones-more or less The Honeymooners in cartoon loincloths-The Simpsons would cease to exist.” I agree 100% with this viewpoint as you cant expect totally new ideas to keep forming, but sometimes it is beneficial to modernize certain aspects of tv shows like The Flintstones while not directly plagiarizing.

The article talked about how with the development of digital imaging and computer software that there has been a new phenomena of creating your own picture through the software. You no longer need to capture 1 image, you can capture 20 and institute them all into one picture. It has eliminated time and space for that reason. It creates a sort of false reality within pictures alot of time, fooling the people who look at it. There is a process of creating new information that is not seen otherwise in a picture and refining the picture to the artist/photographers liking.

“Altered States” is an article that chronicles that gradual shift from sculptures and paintings to photographs. With the ease of developing photographs through scanning, their has been a move away from printed photographs. This process is done through scanning. The fascination with photography in our culture is thriving and it has become more widespread with the ease of distribution through online galleries and books that show off the photographers works.
